The Giant Proto-galaxy Cb58; an Artifact of Gravitational Lensing ? Publication Manuscript

چکیده
The proto-galaxy, cB58, was discovered in the CNOC survey of cluster redshifts. Absorption features reveal that this system is at a redshift of z = 2 : 72, implying an absolute magnitude of M v 26, and a star-formation rate of 4700M yr 1 , making it the most \active" star-forming galaxy. This proto-galaxy is observed to lie close (6 00) to a central cluster galaxy at z = 0 : 373. The X-ray properties of the cluster suggests that its mass, and therefore its lensing potential, could be greater than that found using a virial analysis. In this Letter we argue that the phenomenal properties of this proto-galaxy are due to the gravitational lensing eect of the foreground cluster, and the unlensed properties of the source are typical of high-redshift star-forming systems.

The Counter Arc to MS1512-cB58 and a Companion Galaxy
We present near-infrared spectra of “A2”, the primary counter arc to the gravitationally lensed galaxy MS1512-cB58. The spectra show redshifted Hα, [NII], [OIII], and Hβ at z = 2.728± 0.001. We observe the same Hα/[OIII] ratio as cB58, which together with the redshift confirms that A2 is indeed another image of a single background galaxy. Published lensing reconstruction reports that A2 is a ma...
متن کاملRest Frame Optical Spectra of Lyman Break Galaxies: Other Lensing Arcs around MS1512-cB58
We have obtained near-infrared spectra of two images of the galaxy at z=2.72 which is gravitationally lensed by the foreground cluster MS1512+36. The brighter arc, cB58, is an image of only the nucleus and the southern half of the background galaxy, while the fainter image, A2, encompasses the entire background galaxy. Thus the gravitational lensing provides spatial resolution on a smaller scal...
متن کاملGravitational Lensing in Astronomy
Deflection of light by gravity was predicted by General Relativity and observationally confirmed in 1919. In the following decades, various aspects of the gravitational lens effect were explored theoretically. Among them were: the possibility of multiple or ring-like images of background sources, the use of lensing as a gravitational telescope on very faint and distant objects, and the possibil...
متن کاملTHE ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRUM OF MS 1512−cB58: AN INSIGHT INTO LYMAN BREAK GALAXIES
We present an intermediate resolution, high S/N spectrum of the z = 2.7268 galaxy MS 1512−cB58, obtained with LRIS on the Keck I telescope and covering the rest frame far-UV from 1150 to 1930 Å. Gravitational lensing by a foreground cluster boosts the flux from cB58 by a factor of ∼ 30 and provides the opportunity for a first quantitative study of the physical properties of star forming galaxie...
متن کاملDiscovery of Strong Lensing Clusters in the Sdss Dr6
We discovered strong gravitational lensing in 4 galaxy clusters by visual inspection of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images in Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). Two of them show the Einstein rings, and the other two show tangential giant arcs. These arcs or rings have large angle separations of > 8 from the bright central galaxies. The lensed images in general are bluer than cluster member galaxies. T...
